Who I Am in Background, Business and Heart.
Background:
Twenty years ago, stepping into the spa director world felt incredibly daunting. I distinctly remember a general manager handing me a P&L and requesting a critique by COB. I was at a loss—I didn't understand how to read the P&L, how to write a critique, or what COB even stood for. Feeling unsure of where to turn for help, and knowing failure was not an option, I embarked on a journey of self-teaching. Through trial and error, I made countless mistakes, but had some great success, each one offering invaluable lessons.
During those formative years, I made a commitment to myself: to ensure that no one around me would have to stumble through learning their role as I did. I began teaching anyone willing to learn about the skills needed to become a spa director. Over time, I've had the privilege and honor of mentoring numerous spa leaders. Teaching my spa leadership course has evolved into one of my deepest passions.
Business:
I hold a Business Administration degree from Colorado State University, specializing in Global Tourism Marketing from James Cook University, Australia. I began my journey as a spa director in Telluride, Colorado, and later expanded to lead the team at The Ritz-Carlton in Laguna, California. With a track record of success, I made significant contributions to The Ritz-Carlton's Spa Division, spanning locations such as Denver, Lake Tahoe, Los Angeles, and Dove Mountain. Transitioning to New York, I assumed the role of Spa Director at the iconic New York Palace before advancing to Executive Spa Director at Montage in Beverly Hills, where we notably were awarded with Five Stars from Forbes. Progressing further, I served as the Corporate Operations Director at Arch Amenities Group, overseeing a diverse portfolio of over sixteen spas and consulting sites. With over 20 years of experience, I decided to branch out on my own to contribute and give back to the industry I love.
Heart:
Coming from humble beginnings and being the first in my family to graduate from college, I've always understood the value of hard work and the occasional need for a lucky break. Recognizing the importance of giving back, I founded the Rae of Light Foundation to support the future of the spa industry. Every year, the foundation awards scholarships for individuals to attend my spa leadership course, aiming to empower aspiring leaders to take the next step in their careers.
